Which watches to have in a 2 watch luxury collection?

For a 2 watch luxury collection, which two brands should I have?  Whether you're new to luxury watches or a collector who wants to scale back, which are the two watches or watch brands that should be had?

The answer is as follows: the first should be Rolex and the second a Patek Philippe.  Good examples of these are the Rolex Submariner and the Patek Philippe Calatrava.  Here they are in their full glory:

Rolex Submariner

Patek Philippe Calatrava

The concept behind these choices is as follows.

The Rolex - a globally recognized brand which creates quality products.  Wearing one indicates that the owner has reached a few professional milestones and understands what is a good, solid watch.  A Rolex can be worn to any occasion whether diving 1,000 ft deep in the ocean or going to a fancy party.  You'll look good anywhere.  Rolex retails between $8,000 to $30,000.

The Patek Philippe - this is the best watch brand.  Period.  While not as recognizable globally as the Rolex, anyone who knows anything about watches knows about Patek Philippe.  In fact, anyone who knows anything about Luxury products knows about Patek Philippe.  Patek is the only watch brand that can service any of the watches that they ever made.  And they've been making them since 1839.  Wearing a Patek Philippe indicates that the owner knows what the best luxury products are and can afford them since prices range between $20,000 and $40,000 but have been known to go into the millions.

Having a Rolex and Patek Philippe will allow someone to have the option to alternate between two great choices.  The Rolex can serve in the most utilitarian tasks and do it with style while the Patek Philippe will impress in the most extravagant events.

You have fine taste Will. Question – with a GP and PP pair which would be your golf/yachting/sports and which would be your dinner/special event watch?

Sanjiv, these two watch brands are indeed for rich people. I get the point of your question but I’m afraid that there isn’t a cheaper alternative to get the same effect. These would be two watches/brands that one could be content with if money was no object.

Sure there are less expensive watches that offer great value, for example the Orient Sun & Moon version 3 sells for under $300 on Amazon and has Sapphire glass and a complete in-house movement with a very elegant face. But in the end, it’s a $300 watch.

I think the right thing to do here is to change the article name to include the word “Luxury”. Then the article will make more sense. Thanks
